I will openly speculate that never before in history has
there been such a vast and diverse collection of handguns available for the
public to choose from. Even the
venerable snub nose revolver has new makes and models, some constructed with
super-lightweight space-age materials.
For personal carry or home defense, I offer only that a
shooter may be best served by studying, as much as possible, the diverse texts
that are available and then spending time at the range with as many different
rental handguns as they can afford to shoot before making up their mind as to which
blaster(s) fit their lifestyle.

decide whether a snubbie is the right handgun for you.

ReplyDeleteThe one I have is a Colt Detective Special my stepdad carried when a detective in El Paso. He gave it to mom and I got it from her estate.
It's easier to stash than the 1911. As for shooting, I practice on 25, 50, 75 and 100 foot targets like I do all the handguns. Even at 100 feet it holds a tight pattern.
To me its more keepsake than carry weapon, but I would feel well armed with it.
I like that Fedeal NyClad ammo too. Shoots really well out of my older Model 85. I carry the small revolver as a pocket gun.

ReplyDeleteI just picked up a minty 3rd generation Detective Special in blue, after 31 years of carrying my third generation Colt Cobra in nickle. It's become like a family heirloom now, and I look forward to many years, God willing, of carrying the Detective Special. The great thing is, I've got a ton of holsters already that fit the DS.

Not everyone is cool enough to appreciate the snubbie as a concealed carry weapon or home defense weapon. After the piece you wrote some time ago about your snubbie Python, I knew you were a man of distinction.
Even though I have a lot of pistols to choose from, I often find myself reaching for a Colt snubbie when heading out the door. I've been shooting so long with Cobras and Pythons that I'm real comfortable with them.
Of course, all that being said, I keep a Glock 26 with a couple of extended mags in the glovebox. One never knows...

ReplyDeleteFederal restarted the .38 Nyclad a while back. Some were available at Cheaper Than Dirt for a while, but they are sold old. Dunno if Federal is still making it; I hope so. I rafted up a bunch a few years ago and only shoot it sparingly.
