We have the right to keep and bear arms. We have the right to vote. Just how many people exercise both rights? It cannot be very many or control-freak politicians such as Chicago’s Richard M. Daley would not be in office.
My enthusiasm was tepid with the 5 - 4 Heller ruling. I am equally underwhelmed with the 5 – 4 McDonald ruling. Yes, both were significant decisions, but they are nothing more than a pair of steps on what most likely will be a never-ending journey. For as long as many who keep and bear arms refuse to exercise their right to vote, there will be anti-gun politicians in office forever finding ways to infringe.

As my friend Jeff Snyder has noted in response to the McDonald decision, this and Heller have moved the Second Amendment well away from the framers' original intent, the keeping of arms as a check against a too powerful Government. Now it's all about the keeping of a firearm (with restrictions!) for the purposes of self-defense… in the home!
