WE’RE #1! WE’RE #1! Illinois is the worst state to live in for retirees!

.

Of the ten worst states for retirees, Illinois tops the list. Some folks may be just a might skeptical when I make such claims. This MarketWatch story carriers a bit more clout than my ramblings do.

Why do I stay? Family reasons, mostly. The final chapter of my retirement years is still a rough draft, so I’ll stay put for a while longer. However, the state and local taxes may just force me out sooner than later.

  1. Texas is bad too. We'd welcome you and those like you here, Zach. But you gotta really like the heat and the humidity. OTOH, the humidity does wonders for the skin and the winters are quite mild compared to the rest of the US.

It is very tolerable to live an outdoor lifestyle from about September to April.

Seriously, I read the article but not the study it was based on, but I wonder if crime was a part of the evaluation. Seems like places like Wisconsin would be low on crime against elderly, whilst part of NY, Chicago and other big cities would be more dangerous to live in.

But everybody else, stay away from Texas. We are full.

  2. El Fisho, thanks for the invite; I am flattered. I LOVE heat and humidity!

The taxes on my 3-bedroom home are well over $8,000 a year and climb sizeable amounts every year; we should be over $9,000 a year by 2012. With the state and local governments all near bankruptcy, I guess all any of us can look forward to is higher taxes and less service.

    Thanks for stopping in.

  3. Greetings from Texas,
Fishing Musician beat me to it. If you can handle the heat, come-a-running! I'm not saying we are tax free, but our crooks ain't got the experience of your crooks. That, plus the rabbits and chickens get us a farm write off.

If you want to come this way, and would consider the country life, think about Falls County. Perhaps Wife would consider you proper "Adult Supervision" for me to go to gunshows with.

  5. Property taxes are getting so high here in Texas that retired folks on fixed incomes that own property are going to have to sell out and leave.

  6. Hi Ed! Thanks for stopping in. Yeah, it sure is getting to be crazy expensive everywhere.

Good hunting and fishing to you along with a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

  7. Might want to look at KY. We have open carry here :-)

Born and raised in the flight path of Midway... I got the hell out of there as quickly as I could and haven't looked back.

  8. Hey man, how have ya been?

You remember that Illinois has open carry too... for gang members. Can't say as I blame anyone from scooting out of this state. If the migration continues, the only folks left will be the politicians and those on public assistance.

Yeah, I am fond of Kentucky... and eastern Tennessee where my folks were from. It would be fitting to end my final chapter where my folks started their first...

Merry Christmas to you and your loved.

    Best,

    Zack
