The sounds bullets make when they pass too close for comfort.

.

Have you ever had a day afield when you heard, but did not see, something fly by your noggin at such speed that it could not possibly be a bug? I experienced two such unnerving events, both years ago and years apart. After long pondering the possibilities, I think I found the answer HERE. It is a well-done report with sound samples for different supersonic and subsonic loads.

  1. Yikes. That must have been exceptionally unpleasant.

  2. Well, without having a hole in my skull or a crease in my scalp there is no way to tell for sure... but when I played the sound samples of the .44-40 I did flush with adrenalin.

Like I said, those events were years ago but so profound that they stuck with me. The one event was in winter so it was easy to rule out the possibility of a high speed June bug...

  3. Greetings from Texas,
Too true. The .44-40 was a little unnerving. The sound of .45 ACP is very simular - or so I'm told.
