.22 rimfire is an affordable way to work on the fundamentals. Besides, my arthritic right hand took a hell of beating at the range during Y2K+20 and it needs time to cool down. My centerfire ammo cache still is at enviable levels but the future of guns and ammo sales to civilians is uncertain. I'm going to slow my pace.
I do have opinions about using the .22 for self defense but I'll keep them to myself. Below are some links to articles that cover that issue. Each of us can choose what to use.

If I owned no gun other than a .22 revolver would I carry it for self defense?
I'd certainly give it my best effort.

"My advice to you is to get yourself a gun and learn how to use it.”
Support YOUR local shooting range! You may live to be glad that you did.

I've been reading your site for a while and I thought I'd let you know how much I enjoy your writing.
ReplyDeleteI'm a couple of hours to the south of you - Peoria area.
I've never seen a muzzle up shoulder rig before. How does it work?
I have a similar complement of 22LR learning/training guns - the semi auto is a Browning 1911/22 with terrible sights and the revolver is a S&W 43C.
Thanks for keeping up the blog - reading stuff like this really keeps my spirits up in these trying times.

You could add RENAISSANCE MAN's posts on rimfire self defense handguns, ammunition as well. Some good advice and practices used and discussed.
ReplyDeleteMy 1st ranch carry gun was a Ruger Super Single-Six 6 1/2" revolver. Carried in Bianchi flapped Ruger cavalry holster, it was (and still is) a fine pistol. Self defense use - too slow to draw. I usually had a rifle or shotgun too.
PPK sized handguns are my favorite carry guns. Not too small, just right in my sweet spot. An Erma RX22 still is worn in my G.I. jacket pocket for targets of opportunity. My 3rd gun - a Glock 30 or Star PD is my main side arm.
Ammo has become dear in price.
Hey there Keith! I appreciate your kind words and I appreciated you stopping in. You put a big grin on my fuzzy old face. I haven't been down to the Peoria area for a couple of decades; I used to get down there for fairly often for work related seminars etc.
ReplyDeleteWishing you good shooting and good health! Keep on keeping on.
Best wishes,
Zack
KEITH!
ReplyDeleteYou asked how the SMZ functions. Below is a copy and pasted link that goes to a full description of the rig. I'll also put a live link in the oridinal post (which is something I should have doen in the first place).

Better days are coming.
My best wishes to you and your's,
